The SPCA of Jefferson County is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1891 to help protect and care for domestic animals in Jefferson County. We are the only no-kill facility in the area, as well as being the only shelter to accept owned dogs, stray and owned cats, or small critters of any kind in the county. Our shelter also has the only early-age spay/neuter before adoption program in Jefferson county.

As a non-profit organization, our service to the community depends on the donations that we receive from the general public as well as from our varied fund-raising events. While we do have "SPCA" in our name we do not report to, or get any funding from, the national organization ASPCA.

"Saving one animal won’t change the world, but it will change the world for that one animal."

Adopting from us is easy.  After filling out our Adoption Application our staff to review it.  If you are renting your lease agreement or Landlords name and number will speed up the process. Once everything has been reviewed and approved you and your new furry family member are on your way home after a little paperwork is done.

Our animals are all spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter.  This means that sometimes they have to stay with us a few extra days before going to their new home.  Occasionally this means the new families change their mind or adopt from another shelter.  Because of this we take up to three names to hopefully place the dog or cat in their forever home sooner.
How To Surrender Your Pet to the Jefferson County SPCA

DOGS & CATS:
*Shelter policy is to only take in Dogs & Cats 5 years old and younger.  If you have a dog/cat in need of re homing that is over the age of 5, please call the shelter.  Exceptions have been made based on availability, breed and circumstances.

*All available records need to be brought to the shelter for review (vaccinations, spay/neuter certificate)

*If vaccinations ARE NOT up to date, we will vaccinate for a $10.00 donation.  We are unable to take in un-vaccinated dogs/cats immediately.  You must return home with your dog/cat and bring them back in 7 days or when kennel space is available.

*If vaccinations are current and we have kennel space, we would be able to take your dog/cat immediately.
